Dear Friend of CV,

The sleeping giant is no longer sleeping.

Nearly every Bishop in every diocese has spoken out with courage and conviction. And YOU, the laity, are fired up.

Our message to the Bishops: We have your back. Keep it up!

Over the past week we have been working with bishops, priests and legislators as your voice. They know the CV movement is powerful — and they need our help. We have been hammering home the message: the Catholic Church is united against this unprecedented attack on our freedom. And we won’t back down.

No one likes it when the government makes us pay for something. But it’s unconscionable that the federal government would force us to pay for something we consider immoral.

But Catholics aren’t the only ones that are threatened by this mandate.

Every American who loves freedom should fear a government that can dictate what you can or cannot believe.

That’s why we need to fight for a comprehensive legislative solution that protects the rights of conscience for all Americans — churches, schools, businesses…everyone!

Right now a bill co-sponsored by Republican Jeff Fortenberry (NE) and Democrat Dan Lipinski (IL), would do just that. The bill is titled the Respect for the Rights of Conscience Act or H.R. 1179. The proposed law would prohibit the federal government from requiring a provider to provide, participate in, or refer for a specific health care service contrary to the provider’s religious beliefs or moral convictions. Senator Roy Blunt, R-MO, has a complementary bill in the Senate called S. 1467.

There are several things that Catholics can do right now to make sure we maximize the opportunity to protect our rights of conscience AND expand liberty for all.

  1. Call your Representatives in Washington at the Capital Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Tell your Representative to cosponsor H.R. 1179 and your two Senators to cosponsor S. 1467. Even if your representative or senator is adamantly pro-abortion, you should still call. The pressure is building on every elected official. This is about freedom!
  2. Download the 2-page fact sheet from the U.S. Bishops which answers the most common questions about the mandate. Read the fact sheet and pass it along to your friends. http://usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/conscience-protection/upload/preventiveqanda2012-2.pdf (PDF file)
  3. Listen to our new radio ads going up this week targeting Democrat Senators up for reelection. A politician always listens best before an election. Let’s make sure we have the fuel we need to broadcast this message far and wide.

Pray before these actions steps and pray after these action steps.
Pray for courage and resolve in our Church among the bishops, priests, deacons, and yes, among the laity.

Finally, we are putting tens of thousands of dollars into radio and web ads and more things we will be sharing in the coming days.

If you can help us financially, know that your gift will be put to maximum use.

Brian

P.S. You should know that there is a sense that President Obama — and even some Republicans — may attempt to compromise on the HHS mandate. We must be prepared to stand firm and demand that we will not settle for any “fix” that forces us to violate our conscience in any way. An assault on our first freedom requires more than just a band-aid.
